The Right Way To Store Sewing Supplies

right-way

A well-organized sewing room is usually where magnificent sewing projects come to life. “A place for everything and everything in its place” is a commandment that most passionate crafters and knitters follow while organizing a sewing or craft area. Organizing your sewing space can be very rewarding and therapeutic if done patiently and lovingly. Spend a few minutes in keeping everything in place and you will save valuable hours in future to do the things you love. The pleasure of finding everything in a jiffy will make you highly productive and you’ll enjoy your craft a bit more than usual.

It doesn’t matter if you have a garage, a spare room or corner to work with. Your creative imagination and ideas can create a piece of heaven anywhere. In my case I was lucky to have a loft area in my two-storey house that I could use to carry out my hobby. My husband Jo, who is an expert handyman supported me bigtime in creating the space I call “Oasis”.

Colour Scheme for Craft Room

I read somewhere that ebony and ivory can make your sewing materials stand out making them easy to find hence I went with the two-tone colour scheme for my craft room.  A clean finish is always a great option while working with intricate stuff around you. White can make a room look bigger, while the contrasting black colour adds a touch of class to the surroundings.

Sewing Mat and Thread Catcher

A sewing machine mat can hold your spare threads and small accessories and make your machines look very pretty and organized. The Sewing Machine Mat Organiser from Yazzii is a perfect solution for all sewing machine enthusiasts. This high-quality mat/organizer will ensure that your machine is steady and secure on the table. It eliminates the need to keep stopping and pushing your machine back into place.

Pegboard for Sewing Tool Organization
PEGBOARD

Pegboard is probably one of the most popular ways to organize a sewing space. Pegboard and pegs of all shapes and sizes can be purchased at your local home improvement or hardware store. You can use pegs of different shapes and sizes to hang notions like thread spools or tools of all kinds. I use them toorganize my threads, scissors, and other tools that I use frequently. My friend Anna has a collection of vintage shears that she has inherited and proudly displays them on a large pegboard in her craft studio.

Organizing Rulers in Sewing Space

Rulers can be tricky to store, especially the odd-shaped or large sized rulers. You can use Command Brand Hooks or nails on a wall or door to create customised storage area for large or odd-shaped rulers. They can be removed later without damaging walls. Standing file folder or magazine holders can also make fantastic organizers for rulers, and you can find them easily at any office supply store. These file folders can hold rulers, patterns, and die cutting templates very nicely.

Tackle and Toolboxes to Organize Sewing Supplies

Containers that are made to hold tools, fishing supplies, or other small supplies make an excellent craft storage box for sewing supplies or sewing machine feet and accessories. The toolbox that I use has a deeper storage area on top, and smaller bins that pull out from the front of the box which helps me organize my feet and accessories neatly. You can also use small travel cases or medicine boxes to store your sewing supplies.

Craft Organiser

There are many craft organiser in market that come in various materials, colours and designs. I was gifted a Yazzii Oval Craft Organiser last year and I fell in love with it and it’s been my travel companion on many foreign trips. It has a well-finished zippered storage area that is very functional and practical to store all my craft supplies. The see-through panel makes identification and retrieval very easy. It has an interior with 4 pages of zippered storage. Each page has zippered pockets with see-through fronts and centre dividers. This organizer offers a total of 12 compartments to store all my supplies efficiently. It has a three-sided sturdy zipper to secure the exterior and it allows full opening of the organizer so you can lay it flat and view all the contents very easily. The quilted cotton exterior and interior is of superior quality and the shoulder straps makes it easy to carry it around while travelling.

Rolling Carts to Organize Sewing Tools and Notions

Rolling carts are widely used to organise sewing spaces by many crafters to store notions, tools, and supplies. Since these carts are on wheels, you can easily store them out of the way when you don’t need them and roll them out when you do. These carts come in all shapes and sizes and you can find them with bins or drawers. Go for transparent ones for easy viewing and access otherwise you will have to label each drawer separately to remember where you kept your things. If preferred, you can use an open rolling cart to store your supplies but then there is risk of dust and colour fading if you work with a lot of threads and yarns plus having sharp objects in open may not be safe for your pets and little kids.

Office Supply Storage to Organize Sewing Supplies

Flatware and utensil drawer organizers can be used to hold sewing supplies. They make good craft storage containers and you can find them easily in office supply stores or stores that sells plastic supplies. They can be used inside a rolling cart, large drawers or countertop to store small tools and supplies. Sharp cutting tools fit perfectly in these flatware organizers. Apart from these Caddy and desktop organizers have the right kind of compartments to keep sewing tools in place right next to your sewing area.

Thread Racks for Threads
stand

Thread racks have rows of spool holders and can sit either on a flat surface or hang on a wall.  Racks make it easy to see and access the thread. But they tend to collect dust and can lead to fading if the thread is in direct sunlight or near bright lighting. Due to this reason many prefer thread boxes and threading bags. My friend Jane works extensively with threads and has two bags from Yazzii one in green that holds approximately 48 to 50 spools of threads and another big bag in purple which holds more than 100 threads and it’s called the 100+ Ultimate Thread Organiser.

Craft Storage Box

Having something vibrant and colourful in your craft room or in and around your working area will make your environment very pleasant. The options are unlimited in this category plus you can go wild in creating your own unique craft storage bin if you have the time to make your own.

Craft Wallet –

These small craft wallets are perfect to keep all those little items for sewing especially when you’re travelling. Alternatively, it can be used to carry your credit cards, notes, travel items, stamps, business cards, emergency items, Band-Aids, medical aids etc.

Sewing is something you do to calm and relax yourself. So, create the right kind of ambience and enjoy those moments of solitude and creativity…
